openLCA Software for Life Cycle and Sustainability Assessment

openLCA is a freely available open source software for life cycle assessments and related life cycle analyses, started by GreenDeltaTC. Since 2007 we develop openLCA, with partial support by PE International, PRĂ© Consultants, and UNEP.

September 2008 we published the first release (Beta 1.0) which is available at the Sourceforge site www.sourceforge.net/projects/openlca for download.

Features of the first version comprise:

  • Import and Export for EcoSpold and ELCD format
  • powerful MySQL client server database integrated into the application (-> database can be used and started locally, or used centrally on a server)
  • graphical modelling of product systems
  • complete modelling of a Life Cycle Assessment, with goal and scope definition, inventory, impact assessment, and interpretation
  • system proceses can be generated from unit processes
  • interactve help with search function, index, and bookmark feature

In November 2009, the second version (Beta 1.1) was released (again as open source, and hence fully transparent and freely available).

Changes compared to the first version comprise:

  • Optimised performance
  • Complete re-programming of the graphical product system editor; now also very large product systems with more than 2000 processes can be modelled in a fluent manner
  • Sankey diagram for visualising the effects of processes in the network on the overall result
  • Multi-language support
  • Parameters for processes, product systems, projects, and on a global level were introduced, including a solver for mathematical expressions
  • Allocation and system expansion modelling now available for dealing with multi-purpose processes; different allocation methods available
  • Inventory calculation now possible via matrix inversion method and via the sequential method (the applied method to be specified by the user)
  • Uncertainty modelling and -calculation (Monte Carlo simulation and approximation methods)
  • higher modularity of the source code -> easier maintenance and more flexible adaptation and configuration, easier to integrate external modules

We offer training and service- and support for openLCA. Contact us please if you are interested.

We are reseller for the ecoinvent database, the world's largest database with quality-assured unit processes. We offer therefore ecoinvent licences for openLCA. These can also be used outside of openLCA.
